Pyrgos – Windmills
Opposite the parking lot and the magnificent marble bus stop, go up the main alley which passes by a tavern on the left. On your left you will find the Museum of Tinian Artists and a bit further up the house of the artist Giannoulis Chalepas which is also a museum. At the point where the alley becomes narrower go straight ahead passing by the café until the intersection where you go right towards the village square. At 200 m from the parking lot, you will reach the central square with the 146-year-old plane tree and its beautiful marble fountain. A number of cafés will welcome you. It is worth a stop to enjoy the unique atmosphere of Pyrgos.
The route towards the windmills starts to the left of the marble fountain of the square (do not go up the stairs). Follow the alley through the village heading northeast. Go straight when you reach the point where you find alleys on your left and right and go through the roofed passage. After 230 m, you will find yourselves outside the village at a house with a terrace covered by rocks. The path becomes rocky. On your left there is a low wall hedging some almond trees in. After 130 m, ignore a path coming from the right and go straight ahead for another 40 m until the next intersection where you turn left towards a creek. At the riverbed turn left and immediately right at the plane tree. After 50 m, turn right onto a path opposite a big cypress tree. Continue uphill towards the ridge and at the fork (160 m) turn left walking past the ruins. After 50 m, there is a verdant path on the right which runs towards two deserted windmills, the last out of a series of mills once decorating the ridge. Turn right to visit them. They have a unique architecture; they are cylinder-shaped on the outside and cone-shaped on the inside so as to resist wind force. In addition, on the outside there is a flat surface where an animal tied to a rope would turn the roof of the mill depending on wind direction.
Windmills – Panormos
To continue, go down the ridge for 30 m passing by a small door until the next small cell with cemented roof. At the ruins of another mill turn right, heading east, into a verdant path between walls. Ignore a small path on the right and go straight ahead until the next main intersection with a path coming up from the left where you go straight again (335 m from the mills). If you look behind you, you will see an amphitheatre formed by berms.
At the next wide fork (80 m), turn left and after a few metres right. The path goes downhill. Ignore a small verdant path on the left so that after 460 m you reach a fork again where you go left towards the outskirts of Panormos. Soon you will find yourselves at a place with a triangle-shaped fence. Go downhill to the left, towards the outskirts of Panormos. After 390 m, following the old road you will reach a cemented road which you go down. After 85 m, you will find another small road on the right which leads to a set of stairs that you go down until a small square with oleanders (100 m). Follow the small road until the coastal road with the small cafés and taverns.
If you follow the coastal road keeping to the right, you will arrive at the beautiful and shady beach named Rochari in 15 minutes. If you decide to have a meal, we recommend the tavern named Paleta. A very nice beach as well is that of Saint Athanasios, which is a 20-minute ride in the opposite direction. Follow the beach to the left and then the dirt road towards the island f Planitis.
Panormos-Monastery of Kira-Xeni
To continue the route, follow the main road towards Pyrgos having the sea on your right. After 300 m, turn right onto a dirt road towards a cluster of cypress trees. Follow the dirt road ignoring a road coming from the right (650 m). After 385 m, where the road becomes wider, keep to the right following the white wall. After 190 m, you will find an intersection on the left with a hiking sign. Go straight ahead and you will return to the same spot later in order to go to Pyrgos. Follow the stream for another 100 m and turn right onto a path. At the fork (170 m) keep to the right. Soon (145 m) you will find a large chiseled piece of marble which is a sign of systematic mining in the northern villages. Go up the path on the left until the bridge over the verdant creek with oleanders (280 m). Go up the stairs to reach the monastery. To continue you route to the village of Marlas, follow the asphalt road for another kilometer.
Monastery of Kira Xeni – Pyrgos
To go back to Pyrgos follow the path you have just gone up in the opposite direction for 775 m until you find the intersection with the hiking sign again. Turn right, walk for 320 m until you reach the riverbed again where you go left and immediately right (40 m) onto the old path towards Pyrgos. After 375 m, you will find a bridge with a plane tree and a spring. Right after that the path starts going uphill. Go up the stairs until the main road near the last few houses of the village (290 m). Go across the road and turn onto the first alley on the right. At the corner of the church with the characteristic bell, turn left and immediately right. Go down the stairs and turn left to arrive at a square with a café and a shop. Continue straight ahead, going past the church and at the end turn right, below the roofed passage. Soon you will turn right into the alley (east) which leads to the marble bus stop.
