The political cartoonists Kostas and Vassilis Mitropoulos in totally humoristic mood, have created in Falatados the first cartoon museum in Greece, aiming at getting plenty of smiles!
“From Ancient times to nowadays, Greek political cartoonists are not more than twenty. If two of them –as a matter of fact brothers- originate from this beautiful medieval village, then the House of Sketch could not be elsewhere”.
Laughter is a drogue, is life! Kostas and Vassilis Mitropoulos (known as BAS), political cartoonists that have signed tenths of caricatures in newspapers and magazines of the national and international Press, seem that they know what they are doing, that is why they have decided to make the inhabitants and visitors of Tinos laugh more often! In which way? By creating in 2011 the House of Sketch in Falatados, the first small Caricature Museum in Greece and the entire SE Mediterranean. They say about their initiative: “All over the world, the caricature museums are only nine! The humoristic political sketch is a quite rare topic and even rarer is its “museumization”!
Two of them are in United States and the rest in Europe. Surprisingly, all of them are far from big cities! In France, it is in the Sain Juste Lemartele village, in Italy in the town Bordingera, in Belgium in the Chaist-Douiberghen resort, in Switzerland in the province of Bal and in Bulgaria in the small Gabrovo. However, they are not nine anymore. The spaces of the cheerful cartoons related the political and social everyday life are now ten! From now on Greece has one of its own; and it is located in Faltados, in Tinos”.
The small exhibitive space covers 100m² is housed in the ground floor of the old community of the village and hosts humoristic sketches regarding the world, Greece and Tinos which are renewed every year. Certainly, you wonder for which reason they have chosen for its founding the small medieval village of Tinos and not, maybe the capital city. The brothers give an answer to this: “From Ancient times to nowadays, Greek political cartoonists are not more than twenty. If two of them –as a matter of fact brothers- originate from this beautiful medieval village, then the House of Sketch could not be elsewhere”. So, the famous cartoonists return to their homeland and have undertaken all necessary procedures in order for the first Greek museum of laughter to be created. In this attempt, Mitropoulos brothers were not alone because as they mention “this unique -for the Greek standards- space was created thanks to the quite friendly disposition of the local society as well as the community authority and was realized thanks to the very cordial assistance of the municipality”.
Kostas Mitropoulos first published political sketches in the newspapers NEA and VIMA and continues till this day. He has published several albums, has exhibited in many places and these days he is exhibiting in Tinos. Vassilis Mitropoulos (BAS) mentions regarding his course of career in caricature making “I started in ELEFTHEROTYPIA, then in TACHIDROMOS, ELEFTHEROS TYPOS and ADESMEFTOS. Now I sketch for EPIKAIRA magazine and the newspaper FRANKFURTER ALLGEMEINE ZEITUNG. Since 1970 I collaborate with several foreign newspapers. There are excellences, exhibitions and albums up to the way to Falatados”.
Open daily 19:00-22:00 (From Easter to the end of November).
