Yannoulis Chalepas Museum: A Living Piece of Modern Greek Art
At the entrance of the village of Pyrgos on Tinos, stands the childhood home of Yannoulis Chalepas. This traditional house has been transformed into a museum, housing authentic items from the life and work of the great sculptor. Inside the museum, visitors can view personal belongings, family photographs, notes, furniture, and household items. The workshop, with its tools and sketches, stands out as a genuine journey through time and art.
Who Was Yannoulis Chalepas?
Yannoulis Chalepas (1851–1938) is regarded as the most significant modern Greek sculptor. Born in Pyrgos, he studied in Athens and Munich. His most famous work is The Sleeping Woman, located at the First Cemetery of Athens.
In the late 19th century, Chalepas suffered a nervous breakdown and spent years at the Psychiatric Hospital of Corfu. He returned to Tinos and lived in isolation until, after the death of his mother, he found the strength to create again.
In 1930, he moved to Athens, where he was recognized and honored with the Art Award.
